The Doula Program of the Women’s Resource Center works with pregnant and parenting teens (up to the early twenties), helping them be the best parents they can be. The program needs volunteers in a variety of roles in Grand Traverse, Leelanau and Kalkaska Counties. Volunteers may train to become a labor and delivery coach for young women who need a support person. Volunteers are also needed to be mentoring friends with young mothers and fathers. IF you are interested in becoming a part of the program, call 231-947-0067.

October is “Adopt a Dog Month” at Cherryland Humane Society! A $5 spay or neuter rebate will be offered for all unaltered dogs adopted from Cherryland Humane Society during October. Visit the many homeless animals sheltered at the Cherryland Humane Society on Ahlberg Road in Traverse City or call 946-5116 for more information.

Little Traverse Primary Care will be holding a Patient Appreciation Day Tuesday, September 30th with a picnic on their front lawn on M-119 from 3-6pm. If you would like more information call 347-5400.
 
Thurs. Oct. 2nd
Old Mission Peninsula School will host their annual “Pasta on the Peninsula” fundraiser for family and community members from 5:30pm-8:30pm. The event includes pasta dinner, silent auction, live auction and a 50/50 raffle. Some of the auction items include overnight stays, lawn mowing for 2009, hotel excursions and gift certificates. Dinner prices are $7 for adults, $6 senior citizens and $5 for children 12 and under. Call the Old Mission school for more info at 933-7420.
 
Sat. Oct. 4th
Charlevoix will hold its first annual Oktoberfest to benefit the Charlevoix Area Humane Society Saturday October 4th with wiener dog races, a parade and costume contest at East Park in Charlevoix. Pick your favorite wiener dog and cheer him on amongst the thunder of paws, the thrill of victory and the whine of defeat as dueling dachshunds compete to cross the finish line first. Races start promptly at 3:30pm. For more information visit CharlevoixOktoberfest.com…October spelled with a “K”…
 
Tues. Oct. 7th
The 11th annual soup night will be held as part of the Empty Bowls Project on Tuesday, October 7th from 4-7pm at Money’s Platte River Inn in Honor. Celebrity servers with the area’s favorite soups! Adults $8, children 12 and under $2.50. Carry outs available. Take away your empty bowl to keep with your donation.

The 20th Annual Recovery Plus Program for breast cancer patients and survivors will be held Saturday October 11th at the Waterfront Conference Center in Traverse City and will include discussions with local health care providers regarding genetics, digital mammography and intimacy after breast cancer. For more information call 800-723-0370.

Sat. Oct. 25th
Courtade Elementary School will host the 2008 Costume Classic 5K run/Walk and Child’s Mile cross-country race for families and community members. The 5K Run/Walk will begin at 9:30am and the Child’s Mile cross-country race will begin at 10:30am. Pick up your goodie bags, enjoy face painting, Halloween tattoos and have fun at the decorated children’s course. It all happens Saturday Oct 25th at Courtade Elementary School.

Care Net of Cadillac will be sponsoring their 5th annual Purity Gala Saturday October 25th from 5:30-10pm at Grape Arbor Inn in McBain. The formal evening will include an elegant dinner, event speakers, games, prizes, entertainment and more. Costs $20 per person. Register by October 17th by calling 231-775-1545.
