Seizures and your dog

Pippa experienced her first seizure around the age of 2. She’s been seizure free for over 6 years.

When your dog has a medical issue, it can be heartbreaking. One condition that I’d like to discuss this week is epilepsy. Seizures in dogs are more common than people might think. The first time you witness your dog having a seizure can be incredibly frightening. I have had two epileptic dogs and it is so hard watching them cycle through a seizure.
My dog Pippa had her first seizure when she was around 2 years old and I will never forget it. Luckily, her seizures have been well controlled with phenobarbital and she is now 10. Most dogs who suffer from epilepsy have their first seizure between the ages of 1 and 6. If a dog is elderly and starts having seizures, it is probably another issue from metabolic to a tumor. So the first step it to talk to your vet and try and discover the cause.
The good news is most seizures can be controlled through one of the many drugs available now. Want to know more about seizures and dogs?  Click here.
