Heather's Health Connection

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and so here is your first reminder to do your October self check.  I know I have a hard time remembering myself... so when I saw this, I downloaded it right away!

The non-profit Keep A Breast teamed up with verynice studio and The Rare Studios  to re-think the role of smart phones in breast cancer awareness and prevention. The FREE app provides a visual step-by-step overview of the breast self-exam and allows you to easily schedule an automatic monthly reminder with a pop-up text reminder.

With 40% of diagnosed breast cancers being self-detected, the iPhone and Android compatible app aims to educate young people about the importance of breast self-examination and its timing. The monthly reminder helps the user perform their breast self-exam at the same time every month, at the recommended time, right after your monthly cycle. Because of the normal hormonal fluctuations in a woman’s body that affect breast tissue, it is important to select the same time every month so you will be able to distinguish between normal change and something that feels different.

This app can be downloaded from the iTunes and Google Play stores. Both verynice and The Rare Studio helped make the app possible by graciously contributing over 150 hours of pro-bono service to the organization, allowing us to offer this life-changing – and perhaps life-saving app- free to the public.

Inaccurate Thoughts and unhappiness

by Heather Leigh posted Aug 8 2017 7:16AM
Over the past few months I have been undergoing a bit of a transformation. Not a physical one, but a mental one. My whole life I have struggled with self esteem and confidence. I've always worried about what other people thought about me and have been afraid of so many things. I can worry myself to death about something that has not even happened yet. The mind is such a powerful thing and your thoughts can definitely control your mind and body.

This transformation I have been going through has to do with taking care of myself, making myself a priority, and letting go of those things that I've been carrying around with me that are bringing me down. We all have thoughts that can really affect our happiness without us knowing it. A big one for me is thinking I have to be liked by everyone. Up until a few months ago I would fill with anxiety if I thought someone didn't like me, or I noticed they "unfriended" me on Facebook. Then I learned that I don't need everyone to like me, I just need to find my tribe and be liked by enough people to form a community.

Another big one for me is trying to be competent at everything. As a mom I'm always judging my parenting skills against others and worrying if I don't perform well at a certain task, but recently I have realized I am me, unlike anyone else, and instead of worrying about being good at everything, I'm focusing on my qualities and finding myself and what makes me happy. It's ok that I don't enjoy cooking and I'm not very good at it. My child gets fed healthy food and that is what matters. I am not super creative when it comes to snack day, but Gogurt and pretzels are a perfectly acceptable snack. I am awesome at puppet shows, reading books, and playing barbies with my kiddo.  You do not have to be good at everything to be a good person.

This is a great article if you are struggling with thoughts that are bringing you down. Remember you are an amazing person and deserve to be happy!

Pet of the Week

Bendito…at first I thought, ‘What kind of funny name did they give me?’ When I found out it means “blessed” in Spanish, I decided it was a perfect fit, since I’m definitely fortunate to have ended up here. Everyone is so nice to me and I have lots of good food to eat and even some pals to play with! As nice as it is here, I’m hoping that there’s a family out there meant just for me. I’m only five months old and I have lots of energy so hopefully I can find someone who can keep up with my energy level. Read more about me here.
