Heather's Health Connection

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and so here is your first reminder to do your October self check.  I know I have a hard time remembering myself... so when I saw this, I downloaded it right away!

The non-profit Keep A Breast teamed up with verynice studio and The Rare Studios  to re-think the role of smart phones in breast cancer awareness and prevention. The FREE app provides a visual step-by-step overview of the breast self-exam and allows you to easily schedule an automatic monthly reminder with a pop-up text reminder.

With 40% of diagnosed breast cancers being self-detected, the iPhone and Android compatible app aims to educate young people about the importance of breast self-examination and its timing. The monthly reminder helps the user perform their breast self-exam at the same time every month, at the recommended time, right after your monthly cycle. Because of the normal hormonal fluctuations in a woman’s body that affect breast tissue, it is important to select the same time every month so you will be able to distinguish between normal change and something that feels different.

This app can be downloaded from the iTunes and Google Play stores. Both verynice and The Rare Studio helped make the app possible by graciously contributing over 150 hours of pro-bono service to the organization, allowing us to offer this life-changing – and perhaps life-saving app- free to the public.

Keys for a Successful Marriage

by Heather Leigh posted Jul 12 2017 10:18AM
I will be the first to admit that my marriage is FAR from perfect. We've had our share of struggles, fights, and even separation. Marriage is really hard, especially when one or both of you are headstrong. I definitely am. I like things a certain way and I have a hard time dealing with things when they are not "how I would do them".  Then throw kids, money stress, job stress, and other things in the sometimes feels like it's impossible.

A lot of people have the same complaints about their marriage- "he doesn't listen", "he doesn't help out enough", "she doesn't pay attention to me", "she's not fun anymore". The list can go on and on. The problem most times is, it's really easy to pick apart what our spouse's issues are, but it's hard to take a look in that mirror and admit that we are probably part of the problem.

Marriage counselors can really help be a neutral party when you're trying to figure things out.....but a lot of times they are financially out of reach for couples. So here are the seven keys to a successful marriage from a marriage counselor that are trending online right now. See if you agree and if you are having struggles, try a few of these to see if they help ;)

Swingshift and the Stars is back!

Join Lite 96.3 for the season finale of Swingshift and the Stars! This year, 23 local charities are in line to recieve help from the community. Lite 96.3's Tim Nixon is a judge and we are inviting you to join him for the last event of the season on Friday, December 15th, 7pm at the City Opera House in Traverse City. This is a fun night of entertainment, dancing and a great way to help organizations that keep our area moving. Can't make the event? You can also donate here.

Teddy Bear Patrol is on the move.

The Lite 96.3 Teddy Bear Patrol delivered bears to first responders and those agencies that work directly with children.  Your donations have provided hundreds of bears and they so appreciate it! Click here to read more.
Pet of the Week

Cricket came to us as a stray and had probably had no training.  He is very sweet natured and excited to see you, but once he settles down and realizes you are spending time with him or taking him for a walk he gets much easier.  The other side if that is he seems to be very smart and wants your attention, which would make a great starting point for basic training. Being a Terrier breed, Cricket likes to have something to do, be a job or hang out on the couch and watch TV (or listen to the radio).  For that reason, we think the best home for our Cricket is an active one with someone who would be around most of the time.  Cricket would do best with a large fenced in area so he can run around and maybe chase leaves or snowflakes. Read more about me here.
