Heather's Health Connection

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and so here is your first reminder to do your October self check.  I know I have a hard time remembering myself... so when I saw this, I downloaded it right away!

The non-profit Keep A Breast teamed up with verynice studio and The Rare Studios  to re-think the role of smart phones in breast cancer awareness and prevention. The FREE app provides a visual step-by-step overview of the breast self-exam and allows you to easily schedule an automatic monthly reminder with a pop-up text reminder.

With 40% of diagnosed breast cancers being self-detected, the iPhone and Android compatible app aims to educate young people about the importance of breast self-examination and its timing. The monthly reminder helps the user perform their breast self-exam at the same time every month, at the recommended time, right after your monthly cycle. Because of the normal hormonal fluctuations in a woman’s body that affect breast tissue, it is important to select the same time every month so you will be able to distinguish between normal change and something that feels different.

This app can be downloaded from the iTunes and Google Play stores. Both verynice and The Rare Studio helped make the app possible by graciously contributing over 150 hours of pro-bono service to the organization, allowing us to offer this life-changing – and perhaps life-saving app- free to the public.

Leading a more confident life

by Heather Leigh posted Apr 18 2017 10:50AM
Are you a confident person? A lot of people believe I must be because I talk on the radio and get up in front of people, but I can tell you I'm not. I've never had confidence in myself, even as a kid. I always wanted to try out for performing arts but never did because I didn't think I was good enough. I quit cheerleading before the first football game because I was terrified and thought I would get laughed at if I screwed up. Even now when faced with an event where I have to get on stage and talk I am sick for days before, worried that I will fail.

Now my fear is that I am going to pass that lack of confidence down to my daughter. I want her to try everything and know that she is amazing, no matter if she succeeds or fails. Since she is only 5 I have plenty of time to help her gain the confidence she needs to be successful in life.

But what about me? I'm 44 and still living with a big lack of confidence. It keeps me from pursuing my dreams and trying news things. So what can I, or you, do about it? Well luckily there are ways to lead a more confident existence. One of the biggest ones for me is to stop comparing myself to others. It doesn't matter how much more attractive someone is, or how much thinner they are, or smarter. We are all God's creatures and are all unique. So that's one way to live with more confidence. If you're like me and want to learn more check this out.

Teddy Bear Patrol is on the move.

The Lite 96.3 Teddy Bear Patrol delivered bears to first responders during EMS week. Emmet, Cheboygan and Charlevoix EMS and sheriff deputies are now stocked up for a busy summer. Your donations have provided hundreds of bears and they so appreciate it! Click here to read more.
Pet of the Week

Meet Sally! She can be shy when she first is introduced, but once she warms up, she is like a shadow. Sally is conservative about who her friends are, but once she decides, she is loyal.  Sally and Tank, (our pit bull), are best of friends in play time. Sally keeps her kennel clean. We are looking for an active family with older children and room to run for this girl who is just waiting to blossom when that right family comes along. Read more about me here.
