October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and so here is your first reminder to do your October self check.  I know I have a hard time remembering myself... so when I saw this, I downloaded it right away!

The non-profit Keep A Breast teamed up with verynice studio and The Rare Studios  to re-think the role of smart phones in breast cancer awareness and prevention. The FREE app provides a visual step-by-step overview of the breast self-exam and allows you to easily schedule an automatic monthly reminder with a pop-up text reminder.

With 40% of diagnosed breast cancers being self-detected, the iPhone and Android compatible app aims to educate young people about the importance of breast self-examination and its timing. The monthly reminder helps the user perform their breast self-exam at the same time every month, at the recommended time, right after your monthly cycle. Because of the normal hormonal fluctuations in a woman’s body that affect breast tissue, it is important to select the same time every month so you will be able to distinguish between normal change and something that feels different.

This app can be downloaded from the iTunes and Google Play stores. Both verynice and The Rare Studio helped make the app possible by graciously contributing over 150 hours of pro-bono service to the organization, allowing us to offer this life-changing – and perhaps life-saving app- free to the public.

Ways to Love YOU this Valentine's Week!

I feel like loving myself is one of the hardest things to do. It's not that I believe I'm a terrible person, but I am pretty critical of myself. It's been that way my whole life, unfortunately, so it's tough to teach an old dog new tricks.

Valentine's Day is traditionally about showing your love for someone- your spouse, your kids and your family. But what about you? Maybe this year you should take some time to love yourself. It's not selfish to take care of yourself, to treat yourself, and to focus on yourself. In fact it's actually a very good thing. If you love yourself you're happier and can bring more to others in your life.

I mean how many times have you been in a bad mood and then felt like it's affected the others in your life. It's true. What you put out into the world is what comes back. I know when I'm tired, or cranky, or just down, it even affects the dog! It sounds funny but he knows when I'm not myself and will sit right next to me in an attempt to "cheer me up". 

When I'm having a great day not only do I have more energy but I notice it will rub off on the rest of my family. They are more light hearted and energetic if I am. I feel like I am the captain of our ship when it comes to this. I think the phrase is- " if mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy"!

So what can we all do to love ourselves this week? Here are 5 ways that are super easy!

Pet of the Week 

Meet Sally! She can be shy when she first is introduced, but once she warms up, she is like a shadow. Sally is conservative about who her friends are, but once she decides, she is loyal.  Sally and Tank, (our pit bull), are best of friends in play time. Sally keeps her kennel clean. We are looking for an active family with older children and room to run for this girl who is just waiting to blossom when that right family comes along. Read more about me here.
