If you are looking for a new furry family member for your home, please consider adopting from one of our area shelters. There are thousands of pets each year in Northern Michigan who lose their family for one reason or another. Rescue is love!

Cherryland Humane Society

Name: Bandit

Info: Male, 2 years

Bandit isn’t just a looker-he’s a true sportsman at heart. For this dashing guy, tennis ball is life. Nothing else matters once that green fuzzy ball enters the picture! If you’re in need of a loyal ball-chasing companion, Bandit is your MVP.

With that said, Bandit can get a little too into his game, so it’s important to set boundaries with ball time and work on cues like “drop it”-he has a habit of helping himself to toys (and sometimes hands!) when excitement takes over. Because of this, a home with mature, dog-savvy kids is the best fit.

Bandit enjoys the great outdoors, where he can sniff to his heart’s content and show off his leash skills. While he may come off a bit aloof at first, he warms up with patience and soon reveals his affectionate side. He’s a big fan of booty scratches, cozy snuggles, and playing detective to find where you’ve hidden his beloved tennis balls.

He’s smart, eager to please, and already knows sit, down, and come. As a working dog type, Bandit thrives when his brain and body are engaged-so a home that can offer enrichment, structure, and continued training would be ideal.

Bandit has potential to live with cats and other dogs with ongoing socialization and guidance. When the tennis balls are put away, he’s a curious, gentle, well-mannered gentleman who’s ready to explore the world by your side.

Ready to meet your match on and off the field? Bandit’s waiting-ball in mouth.

TC PAWS

Trixie
Tabby / Domestic Short Hair
Small Adult Female (spayed)
3 years old
Light Brown Tabby
When I was a year old, I was found living on my own, suffering from stomatitis that made my mouth hurt. Eating was painful, and I weighed less than 5 pounds. TC Paw got me the help I needed, and now I eat like a champ and have steadily gained weight. I take medication that I’ll need to stay on.
My foster mom can show you how. I am very affectionate. I love to have my head scratched and to curl up on your chest with my head snuggled under your chin. I purr so loudly.
One thing I don’t like, though, is having my belly rubbed. When I nap, I like to be under something – covers, a blanket, the couch, or the bed. My foster family calls me “cave kitty.” I think that’s cute. I am playful and active.
My favorites are dangly toys and the red dot. Sometimes I get over-stimulated when I play, and I might nip or grab your arm and bunny kick. Active playtimes through the day should help with this. A home without little children is best for me. I like to be with people. When I first meet you, I run and hide, but I’ll come right out for attention as soon as I think it’s safe. I like the other cats in my foster home.
We play together, and I would love a cat pal in my new home. I’ve warmed up to the family’s dogs too. They’re cat friendly, and I even rub up against them. In a quiet home with an experienced family that can read cat signs, I will be a terrific girlfriend.
Lexi
Domestic Short Hair / Dilute Calico
Medium Adult Female (spayed)
5 years old
Dilute Calico (white brown and gray)
Lexi was born to a feral mom and adopted from AC PAW in 2020 but returned to TC Paw recently. In her current fos ter home, she’s a sweet cat who loves attention and wants to be with people. Wand toys and catnip are among her favorite pastimes.
She’s a talker. She’ll tell you what she wants. With a slow introduction, she tolerates other cats. She’s not familiar with dogs and would need time to adjust.
Lexi will do best in an adult home with experienced cat owners. Her previous owner had issues with unprovoked biting, which is why she was returned.
Her current foster has not had problems with that and believes that an adopter who understands Lexi’s cues and is familiar with cats will have a wonderful companion.

If you are interested in adopting this TC Paw cat or would like to set up a meet-and-greet, please complete the  Pre-adoption Application .

Their mission is helping cats and kittens in the greater Traverse City region through rescue, spay/neuter, fostering, adoption, education and community collaboration.

Charlevoix Humane Society

Meet our Pet of the Week, Gypsy!
Well, hello there! The name’s Gypsy and it’s just so great to meet you! I’m a 3-year-old Shepherd mix who found my way here after being in a giant facility downstate where there were way too many dogs. The nice staff here at the shelter opened their doors to me and gave me a nice place to stay, and I have to say, I like it much better here.
The staff here tells me I’m “quite the character” whatever that means. I’m the fastest girl around and love speeding through the backyard, sometimes I even go so fast I forget where I’m going and have found myself crashing into something or other. That’s okay though, I get right back up and I’m ready to run again! My dream human would be someone who is very active, like me. I’d love to go for walks and hikes, and I’d even give swimming in the lake a shot if they let me.
My past is a bit of a mystery, but what I do know is that I do not like other dogs, so a home where I can be the only pet would probably be best. I seem to be house trained and they tell me I do a great job of keeping my kennel clean. Stop by and say hello to me, and maybe we can start our very own adventure together!

Little Traverse Bay Humane Society

Hi there friends! My name is Fiona and I am a super sweet 5 year old pit mix that came to LTBHS in hopes of finding myself a forever home. If you are interested in adopting me, please fill out an application and come on in to spend some time with me. I hope to meet you soon!

The Little Traverse Bay Humane Society is at 1300 West Conway Road or online at LTBHS.com. They are a private, no kill shelter serving Emmet County.

AuSable Valley Animal Shelter

Hello Friend! I’m Uno, yep – that’s right – just like the card game! The shelter staff gave me the name Uno, because they said that I’m 1 of a kind. I’m big, I’m handsome, and I have about 1 brain cell total – I don’t take offense, they say all the best boys do!

I am an American Bulldog, weighing in at about 110lbs. I’m roughly 1-1.5 years old, I’m neutered, I’ve been vaccinated, microchipped, and I’m up to date on my heartworm testing!

As you know, I’m a big dude, with a big personality, and a big past that I’m trying to overcome. I was originally found in Genesee County, when Animal Control saw a very angry & mean person throw me from a moving vehicle. I was scared, & injured, and hesitant to trust anyone again. Thankfully my friends at Genesee County Animal Control helped me learn that I could trust people again, and helped me get a much-needed surgery for my eyes! Then they reached out to my friends here at AVAS and I made my big journey up North!

Since I’ve been here, I’ve come such a long way! I’ve healed from my eye surgeries; I’ve been spending time playing with all the toys and eating all the snacks! I should let you know, I am an equal opportunity snacker! I love all of the snacks, treats, and I will eat anything – anytime! I love to enjoy long and slow walks, and take in all the smells outside. I also love to just roll around in the grass and relax!

The home I’m looking for will have humans familiar with large breed dogs, lots of patience (bonus points for those that have helped dogs overcome their past), older teenage children, and a comfy couch for me to relax. Although I’m young, I tend to be a bit on the lazy side. Oh, and a well-stocked treat cabinet is a must for me. I tend to get very excited and prey driven when I see those things that meow, so a home with no cats is going to be best for me. I might do well living with another dog, but I’d have to meet them first to make sure we’re compatible.

I’m hoping someone out there is looking for a smushy face like mine to make their house a home. If you’d like to meet me, or have any questions about me, reach out to my friends at AVASCares2@gmail.com, or by phone at 989-348-4117. I hope I get to meet you, and test drive your couch soon!
