Pet of the Week 2025

If you are looking for a new furry family member for your home, please consider adopting from one of our area shelters. There are thousands of pets each year in Northern Michigan who lose their family for one reason or another. Rescue is love!

Cherryland Humane Society

Guy is a happy, wiggly, and oh-so-handsome five year old pup with the best smile and an even better heart. This sweet and affectionate guy loves leaning into pets, melting in your lap, and following his favorite people around the house. Whether he’s splooting in the grass, sniffing pretty flowers, or enjoying a soft cookie, Guy finds joy in life’s simple pleasures.

Guy is curious and brave, doing his best to explore new spaces – especially when given time, patience, and a little encouragement. He’s got potential with both dogs and cats, and would thrive in a calm home with respectful, dog-savvy kids. Loud noises and quick movements can be a bit overwhelming for him, so slow, thoughtful interactions are the key to winning him over.

This sweet soul is looking for a confident, compassionate adopter who will let him go at his own pace and help him continue building trust and confidence. With ongoing training, consistency, and lots of love, Guy is sure to blossom into the loyal companion he’s meant to be.

If you’re ready to share your heart (and your cookies), Guy is ready to share his.

Cherryland Humane Society is a private, no kill animal shelter servicing Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties. We are an independent, 501-C, non profit organization. CHS is dependent on donations, fundraising activities, estates, planned giving, memorials and occasional grants for operation. Visit our available pets online at cherrylandhumane.org

TC PAWS

We have a BONDED pair this week with TC Paw Cat Rescue: Maureen and Izzy. Maureen is the long fur brown and Izzy is the dark torti fur.

Maureen is a friendly, confident cat who looks you right in the eye. She kind of flirts with you by rolling on her back when she wants something. Really cute. She’s a pretty cat with a mane around her face, a bushy tail, soft fur, and eyes that go from gold to green in different light. She’s quick on her feet and likes to stand on shoulders or chair backs to be close and observe. She uses her scratching post regularly. Maureen loves attention. Pick her up and hold her to your chest, talk to her, and let her curl up in your lap. She looks out the window and chatters at birds. When she’s hungry, Maureen will nibble and lick the ends of your fingers. Maybe it’s a behavior left over from being a hungry stray that will fade when she’s confident that there’s plenty of food. Maureen came in with another cat, Izzy…

Izzy made herself right at home with her foster family. She has a loud purr, and she likes to be picked up and held. She has beautiful green eyes, a shiny tortoiseshell coat, and an orange spot on her rear paws. She’s quick on her feet, uses her scratching post, likes to stretch out, and enjoys exploring high, low and small spaces. When it’s naptime, she finds a quiet spot. Possibly because she was so hungry as a stray, Izzy has a big appetite and will finish a slower cat’s food. Her foster intervenes, and we think this behavior will fade as Izzy gets more confident that there’s plenty of food.

Again, Maureen and Izzy are bonded, and we feel they need to stay together.

TC Paw Cat Rescue was formed in the Spring of 2023 after the well-known northern Michigan rescue group AC PAW retired their rescue program for cats and dogs. Their mission is helping cats and kittens in the greater Traverse City region through rescue, spay/neuter, fostering, adoption, education and community collaboration.

Northern Purr Cat Rescue in St. Helen (Roscommon County)

Meet Taz. She is a senior gal at 12 years old looking for a quiet home. She is not a fan of dogs and has not been around cats. Her purrfect home would be an older couple or someone that will let her be the queen of the castle. She is ok being left alone. Taz does like to play. She is not a lap cat but will be close by to keep you company and will let you know when she would like attention.

Charlevoix Humane Society

Meet Tatum!

Tatum is a sweet, playful kitten here at the Charlevoix Area Humane Society who came to us as an itty-bitty stray back in May. Since then, Tatum has spent her time in the cat room visiting volunteers and her fellow kittens and has proven to be one of our most ambitious critters.

Tatum has a huge love for toys, kittens, and people alike, and would make a great addition to any home looking for a new friend!

Little Traverse Bay Humane Society

Hi I’m Zoey! I’m a mini schnauzer with a soft heart and quiet paws. I’m not the kind of dog who runs up with tail wags and sloppy kisses right away. I like to hang back, watch a little, and figure things out on my own time. But if you’re calm and kind – oh, I’ll notice. I always do. I don’t need much – just a peaceful home, patient people, and a soft place to land. If you’ve got a gentle heart like mine, we might just be perfect for each other.

Ready when you are.
– Zoey

The Little Traverse Bay Humane Society is at 1300 West Conway Road or online at LTBHS.com. They are a private, no kill shelter serving Emmet County.

AuSable Valley Animal Shelter

Hiya, my name is Petey the Piggy – though I do go by just Petey. My friends around the shelter actually call me Piggy Pete, because I’m a stout (just under 50lbs), treat-motivated guy! I’m 4 and a half years old. In case you haven’t noticed: I’m absolutely HANDSOME!! I have a big kissable forehead and the brightest blue eyes. My coat has a Merle pattern to it and I am truly one of a kind! You can’t name just one breed to encompass what a stunning dog I am, so they call me a Medium Mixed Breed around these parts!

I was found as a stray originally but am currently being fostered in a home outside of the shelter; where they have found I’m housetrained, do fine with cats, and would do best as an only dog. I guard my toys around other dogs, and I just don’t quite understand how to play appropriately when they try to take my toys away from me. I don’t see cats as a threat to take away my toys, so I’ve even hung out with five cats at once and I just took a nap on the couch! I’m a huge cuddle bug and definitely want to sleep in bed with you: under the covers, pressed up against your side is right where I need to be. I make a fantastic cuddle buddy!

I adore going for walks with my human and sometimes go for walks without them! So, I will definitely need a fenced in yard or leashed walks only, because I follow my nose wherever the scent trail goes. I am great in the car and frequently will place my big ‘ole head in your lap or on your arm to take a nap as you drive. However, if I think you are taking a car ride without me, I will definitely chase the car down to make sure you didn’t forget me by accident! I am a HUGE pup cup fiend and you better not be going to Starbucks without me!

If you’d like to meet me, please come by Tuesday through Saturday, 10 AM to 6 PM. If you have any questions, give the shelter a jingle at 989-348-4117 or email them at AVAScares2@gmail.com.

Cheboygan County Humane Society

Breed: Hound Mix
Age: 3 years old
Sex: Female
Color: White/Tan
Spayed/Neutered: Yes

Say hello to Marley! This sweet girl is a three year old hound mix just looking for love. She loves to make friends with anyone and anything! All Marley wants to do is be by your side, regardless of what you’re up to. She enjoys being with someone so much so, that she gets a fair bit of separation anxiety when she is alone and would do best crated in those situations. She does know a few basic commands and does well on a leash!

cheboyganhumanesociety.org. Or stop by the shelter at 1535 Hackleburg Road, Cheboygan. Call 231-238-8221 for more information. Shelter hours are Mon-Fri 9-4pm and Saturday noon-4pm.
