Pet of the Week 2025

If you are looking for a new furry family member for your home, please consider adopting from one of our area shelters. There are thousands of pets each year in Northern Michigan who lose their family for one reason or another. Rescue is love!

Cherryland Humane Society

Malbec is a beautiful 4-year-old spayed female who has had quite the journey. She was discovered living as a stray on our property, and we have no idea how long she had been on her own. It took some time for her to adjust and settle into her new surroundings, but with patience and care, she has started to show us just how incredibly sweet and loving she can be.

Malbec may have a shy, reserved side at first, but underneath it all, she’s a tender-hearted kitty with so much love to give. It’s clear that, in the right environment, she’ll flourish into the affectionate companion she’s meant to be. She’s made incredible progress, and we’re confident that with the right home-one that’s calm, quiet, and full of patience-she will continue to open up and become even more lovable.

Malbec would thrive best in a home where she can feel safe and understood, with humans who are willing to let her take things at her own pace. If you’re ready to give this sweet girl the quiet, loving space she needs to fully trust and blossom, Malbec could be the perfect fit for your family.

Come meet this precious girl and see how she’s ready to offer a lifetime of love in return for the patience and care she deserves.

Cherryland Humane Society is a private, no kill animal shelter servicing Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties. We are an independent, 501-C, non profit organization. CHS is dependent on donations, fundraising activities, estates, planned giving, memorials and occasional grants for operation. Visit our available pets online at cherrylandhumane.org

TC PAWS

We have a another BONDED pair this week with TC Paw Cat Rescue: Pam and Molly. Pam is a Domestic Short Hair /GRAY Tabby, Medium Adult Female (spayed)
1 year old and Molly is same, but with brown fur.

Pam came to TC Paw through a trap-neuter-return project in Elmira where the two pregnant cats dropped off at a barn a couple years before had become 40 cats, and the overwhelmed family needed help. We took in some of the cats we felt could be animal companions. Pam was among them. Like many cats who live feral for a while, Pamwas timid and hesitant at first. She still hides sometimes, but she really loves to be petted and head rubbed, and she’s figuring out that she has to emerge from under things so that you can reach her to pet her. She purrs, pushes her head into your hand, and stretches out for you. Move slowly and easily as you pet her. Pam gets along with other cats. She’s a good eater and tidy litter box user. She likes her scratching post. Pam is a quiet, gentle cat who will do well in a calm, adult home where she has time to learn that being a pet means living her best life.

Pam came to her TC Paw foster home with another cat, Molly…

Molly came to TC Paw through a trap-neuter-return project in Elmira where the two pregnant cats dropped off at a barn two years before had become 40 cats, and the overwhelmed family needed help. We took in some of the cats we felt could be pets. Molly was among them. In her TC Paw foster home, she hid at first and was very timid and skittish. Now, however, she’s figuring out that this indoor cat thing is a pretty good gig – all the food she wants, treats, soft surroundings, toys, and people to pet her and scratch her head the way she likes. Every day, she gets more pet-like and less easily spooked. She’s playful, curious, and observant. She gets along with other cats. She’s a good eater and tidy litter box user. We think she’d be okay with older kids, but little ones might scare her. In a calm home with patient people, pretty Molly will continue to bloom.

If you are interested in adopting these TC Paw cats or would like to set up a meet-and-greet, please complete the  Pre-adoption Application .

TC Paw Cat Rescue was formed in the Spring of 2023 after the well-known northern Michigan rescue group AC PAW retired their rescue program for cats and dogs. Their mission is helping cats and kittens in the greater Traverse City region through rescue, spay/neuter, fostering, adoption, education and community collaboration.

Northern Purr Cat Rescue in St. Helen (Roscommon County)

Meet Taz and Ashton! Tax is a senior gal at 12 years old looking for a quiet home. She is not a fan of dogs and has not been around cats. Her purrfect home would be an older couple or someone that will let her be the queen of the castle. She is ok being left alone. Taz does like to play. She is not a lap cat but will be close by to keep you company and will let you know when she would like attention.

Ashton is a sweet boy that loves to be pet.  We don’t know his story but he is ready to start a new chapter with his furever family.  He is neutered and vaccinated.  Once settled he will be your buddy and hang with you whenever he can. Look at those big beautiful eyes.  How can you say no to his requests?

Charlevoix Humane Society

Hello there, the name is Brady and I am a hound/lab mix who found my way to the shelter after being transferred from downstate.

The early years of my life are pretty unknown, but I don’t think I grew up in the best environment, and that has caused me to be fearful of lots of things. New people can be intimidating, and I struggle with making new people friends because of my nervousness. I’m afraid of doorways, walks and loud sounds, but I promise I’m trying to work on it and be brave. The world is pretty scary though, especially when you’re all alone. Maybe you could be my emotional support human and we can try new things together and work on me becoming braver?

I do well with other dogs, and having a dog friend really helps my confidence. I haven’t totally figured out this whole playing thing, but I think a companion would really help get me out of my shell. I would likely do well with cats but young children may be a bit much for me.

Adopting a pet from the Charlevoix Area Humane Society not only changes the life of an animal but also enriches your own life in countless ways. If you would like to adopt one of our dogs or cats, you will need to fill out an application and once it is approved, we can then set up an appointment for a visit. Please call 231-582-6774 with any questions.

AuSable Valley Animal Shelter

Hi Friends! My name is Skylar because for me, the sky is the limit! I am an almost 5-year-old, female, Alaskan Malamute, please don’t confuse me for a husky – while we have a lot of similar qualities – I’m convinced that being a Malamute is where it’s at! I weigh in right at about 100lbs, and I’ve been spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, and I’m up to date on my heartworm testing.

I am looking for a furever home that understands large breeds like me and is aware of my grooming needs – I’m a high maintenance girl and I’ll need lots of spa days every year! I might be open to sharing a home with a fur sibling my size – but I’d need to meet them first to make sure we click. I wouldn’t do well living with a small dog, and I’m not a fan of cats – they just aren’t for me. I seem to do well with kids, and all people I meet. I know lots of tricks – sit, down, shake, and even speak! I’m potty trained! When I’m not enjoying snacks, or long walks outside, I am a bit of a couch potato and love to snuggle. I’m so ready to settle in with a new family.

I am available to meet Tuesday – Saturday from 10am-6pm. If you have questions about how much I shed, or what my favorite smelling shampoo is – please reach out to my friends at AVAS. Email them at AVASCares2@gmail.com or by phone at 989-348-4117. I hope I get to meet you soon and show you all my tricks!
