Pet of the Week 2025

If you are looking for a new furry family member for your home, please consider adopting from one of our area shelters. There are thousands of pets each year in Northern Michigan who lose their family for one reason or another. Rescue is love!

Cherryland Humane Society

Hi friends! My name is Elaine. I arrived at CHS from my friends at Bark Nation, they saved me. Before Bark Nation, I was abused and misguided to what pet ownership really means. Now I am loved, safe, free from pain, called a good girl, receive all the booty rubs, and have all the tennis balls my puppy heart desires. I would make the perfect hiking buddy as it’s one of my favorite activities (as long as it’s a nice day). Playing in the sun with my favorite toys and my best friends is the dream. My favorite toys are tennis balls and stuffies. If you are looking for a sweet, lovable older gal who is still ready for adventures – call my friends at the shelter to learn more about me. Help me make my dreams come true, I know I deserve it! Please ask my friends at the shelter about my medical needs!

I would like to be the only animal in the home and mature kids (12+) for me please.

Cherryland Humane Society is a private, no kill animal shelter servicing Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties. We are an independent, 501-C, non profit organization. CHS is dependent on donations, fundraising activities, estates, planned giving, memorials and occasional grants for operation. Visit our available pets online at cherrylandhumane.org

TC PAWS

We have a BONDED pair this week with TC Paw Cat Rescue: Lucy and Molly. Lucy is a domestic medium adult spayed female, 2 years old. Her sister, Ethel is same.

Lucy and her sister Ethel were found living outdoors in a garage this spring. They had been there all winter, fed by a neighbor.

Lucy has gone from being terrified to seeking attention. The more outgoing of the two, Lucy is a sweet, gentle cat who likes to lick your fingers.

She’s not sure about new places and people, but with time to adjust and a gradual introduction, she’ll be comfortable in a quiet home. She likes kids and other cats. Lucy loves her sister Ethel. They’re a bonded pair who need to find a home together.

If you are interested in adopting these TC Paw cats or would like to set up a meet-and-greet, please complete the  Pre-adoption Application .

TC Paw Cat Rescue was formed in the Spring of 2023 after the well-known northern Michigan rescue group AC PAW retired their rescue program for cats and dogs. Their mission is helping cats and kittens in the greater Traverse City region through rescue, spay/neuter, fostering, adoption, education and community collaboration.

Northern Purr Cat Rescue in St. Helen (Roscommon County)

Meet Taz and Ashton! Tax is a senior gal at 12 years old looking for a quiet home. She is not a fan of dogs and has not been around cats. Her purrfect home would be an older couple or someone that will let her be the queen of the castle. She is ok being left alone. Taz does like to play. She is not a lap cat but will be close by to keep you company and will let you know when she would like attention.

Ashton is a sweet boy that loves to be pet.  We don’t know his story but he is ready to start a new chapter with his furever family.  He is neutered and vaccinated.  Once settled he will be your buddy and hang with you whenever he can. Look at those big beautiful eyes.  How can you say no to his requests?

Charlevoix Humane Society

This cutie patootie is Snowball. Snowball is considered a special needs dog as she is totally deaf, but she doesn’t let a little thing like that get in her way! Snowball is full of spunky sweetness and has wonderful manners. Snowball was originally adopted from us several years ago but was found running as a stray in another county and was never picked up. After that Snowball found herself back at CAHS in search of a lasting forever home. Snowball has won all of our hearts over and loves spending time in our front office greeting anyone who enters. She loves to sit in chairs or on our front bench staring out the window. She loves everyone that she meets and we just can’t believe she is still with us. Snowball does not care for other dogs but we think she would be fine with cats. She is also house trained. Open your home to this little lady and we promise she will warm your heart! Snowball is currently in a wonderful foster home, but still in search of a permanent place to call her own.

A message from Snowball’s foster mom:
I have been snowballs foster mom for 7 months now, she is so sweet and eager to please, Snowball is completely deaf but she does know some hand signals, whomever adopts her, through the Charlevoix county humane society , there will be one hour donated by a personal dog trainer to help with your communications. Her sense of smell is superior her vision is excellent and she can feel vibrations, she’s an excellent car rider. Her baby blue eyes are just gorgeous. Snowball loves to snuggle, she loves all human beings including my great grandkids.

A fenced in yard would be ideal for her, and she is a great Walker unless her nose smells something, so you’re going to want to be strong enough to control her, she’s not fond of other dogs but I am sure that could be trained out of her. She appears to be okay with cats?., she does not like kennels, I had a large one, and she was biting and squeezing the metal frame, I was afraid she was going to hurt her teeth, so I did let Snowball have the run of the house and she did a little counter surfing, ate a whole stick of butter, other than a little cleanup , nothing was damaged. She didn’t chew anything, other than the butter. she does have separation anxiety, and because she rides so beautifully, it’s just easier for me to take her everywhere I go, (I’m retired). She does have some skin allergies, but seem to be under control with minimal ingredients dog food, and minimal ingredients treats.
Because snowball can’t hear you get up and walk around, like other dogs, other dogs can hear If you are still in the house,Snowball will stare at you a lot, she’s eager to learn, and if she’s sleeping and opens her eyes and you’re not there she’s roaming the house to find you,
Which is actually pretty quick her nose is really good. And I hope whoever adopt her will have patience and love her because she’ll surely give it right back. It’s going to take more effort with snowball but she is so worth it… It’s like the special needs dogs behave better maybe because they try harder?

Adopting a pet from the Charlevoix Area Humane Society not only changes the life of an animal but also enriches your own life in countless ways. If you would like to adopt one of our dogs or cats, you will need to fill out an application and once it is approved, we can then set up an appointment for a visit. AuSable Valley Animal Shelter

Hi Friends, I’m Juno! Sometimes the shelter staff call me Jumping June, June Bug, or Junie B! Call me whatever, just don’t call me late for dinner or treats!

A little about me, I am a medium/large mixed breed girl, weighing in at about 50lbs. I am roughly 3.5 years old. I’ve been spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and I’m up to date on my heartworm testing! I’m so ready to find my furever home! A little about me and my past. My sisters and I came to AVAS after our owner fell on some hard times, and made the shelter aware that our life before here may not have been very kind to us. I am kind of like a turtle that my worries just roll off my back and I forget about it with a good butt wiggle.

Because my past was less than ideal, I’m in need of a dedicated human that will work with me on some basic training skills. The shelter team says I do a great job at keeping my kennel clean, and in a home setting with some boundaries I’d likely potty train quickly. I should also tell you that I’m a professional cuddler. Once I settle down and get my zoomies out, I love a good snuggle with humans, and I’m very loving. I might do well living with another dog, as long as I get to meet them first, but I don’t think I could live with those things that meow – I have a bit of a high prey drive. At the shelter I’m working on getting better at walking calmly on a leash, learning not to jump up, and how to play with my friends appropriately – sometimes I get a little too rough. Those items being mentioned, I’d likely do better in a home without small children as I might risk knocking them over. My previous owner said I was exposed to life with kids, and I did really well, but I’m not sure if living with little ones full time would be the best for everyone.

When I’m not outside chasing butterflies or playing with my sister, I’d love to meet you. You can stop by the shelter Tuesday-Saturday 10am-6pm to hang out with me and see if we’d be a good fit. If you have questions about me, please reach out to the shelter by emailing AVASCares2@gmail.com or by phone at 989-348-4117. Hope to see you soon!

Say hello to Scrappy! We do not know a lot about Scrappy, but we know he loves life! We are guessing he is about six years old and has a lot of life left to live. This little guy is always so happy, as you can see from the photos he is always smiling! He may do alright with another dog but a meet and greet would be required. Scrappy needs to be groomed every few months as his hair can get a little crazy!

cheboyganhumanesociety.org. Or stop by the shelter at 1535 Hackleburg Road, Cheboygan. Call 231-238-8221 for more information. Shelter hours are Mon-Fri 9-4pm and Saturday noon-4pm.
