First Weekend in September

weekend-fun-5-fall

Summer has “unofficially” ended in northern Michigan, but does that mean the fun has come to an end? Never! Here are five events to consider while planning your up north weekend…

For those who enjoy a great night time light show, the International Fireworks Championship will take place Friday & Saturday, both days, from 6PM-10PM at Turtle Creek Stadium. This year, six incredible teams from around the world, including Canada, & the USA, will light up the sky in an epic battle for the best fireworks. If an outdoor adventure is what you crave, venture into the wild heart of Sleeping Bear Dunes on a guided forest hike. Hosted by Sleeping Bear Tour Co., this immersive hiking experience takes you deep into the National Lakeshore’s secluded, forested trails, where towering trees, quiet wildlife, and the whispers of ancient dunes create a sanctuary few travelers ever see. Led by local naturalists and storytellers, this hike reveals a side of Sleeping Bear that’s both rugged and serene, ideal for nature lovers, photographers, and those seeking a deeper connection to Michigan’s most beautiful places. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned adventurer, the Sleeping Bear Wilderness Hike is a Pure Michigan experience you’ll never forget.

Who doesn’t love a visit to Mackinac Island? Many of us have ridden our bicycles around the island, but if you’v always wanted to participate in the 8 Mile Road Race, this is the weekend to do it. In its 54th year, you will experience Mackinac Island in one of the oldest and most scenic races in Michigan. With up to 1,600 runners and walkers, this is definitely a race you and your family will never forget! For more details, visit: runmackinac.com/mackinac-island-eight-mile/

Spud’s the word this weekend in Posen as they celebrate everything potato at the Posen Potato Festival from Friday through Sunday. It will be a weekend of polka bands, a flea market, arts & crafts, a parade and more! A complete schedule of events for the 74th Annual Posen Potato Festival can be found at: posenpotatofestival.com

Let I said before, summer has “unofficially” ended. With that, apples are starting to become in season. So, why not celebrate it with the Apple BBQ Festival in Silver Lake? Bring your appetite, your bib and the whole family to the smokin’ hot Apple BBQ Festival, with two days of live music, a beer tent, a huge selection of food vendors, kids’ activities, over 100 arts and crafts vendors, a classic car show, and more! Don’t leave without a freshly baked apple pie, or locally grown apples! Festival details can be found at: applebbqfestival.com

Summer may be “unofficially gone,” but the fun continues throughout northern Michigan as we see the leaves start to change, the apple pies made, and cooler temperatures make their way here. Get out, embrace the change, and have fun! – John Kelly
