Up North Fun for the First Weekend in October

The weekend may be sunny and warm, but fall is here in northern Michigan. The start of October is full of festivities. Here are some of those Fall Fun Five Weekend activities to enjoy.

First on our Weekend Fun Five list is Skitoberfest 2025. It is a weekend long event from Friday thru Sunday at Boyne Mountain Resort. You will enjoy craft beers, Bavarian eats, and live music. You can challenge your friends to stein hoisting, keg throwing, or spouse-carrying competitions. You’ll also be able to try your hand at axe-throwing and pie-eating. And though a little early, take part in the Pray for Snow Bonfire. More details and tickets at BoyneMountain.com on their events calendar.

Would it be fall without cider, donuts and pumpkins? The Traverse City Shop & Sip Fall Festival will be this Saturday from 11am till 5pm at Mt. Holiday Ski Hill. Makers, artisans, and small businesses will showcase handcrafted jewelry, home decor & more. There will also be food trucks, warm cider, and autumn-inspired treats, along with live music, face painting & pumpkins. This event benefits Mt. Holiday. $5 for tickets. If you’d like to enjoy and evening of wine and dinner, the 3rd Annual Uncork Up North will take place this Friday at 7pm at the Hagerty Garage in Traverse City. Enjoy a strolling dinner & wine pairings by some of the area’s most acclaimed professionals, among others, to benefit the Cowell Family Cancer Center Fund through Munson Healthcare. This event supports women in northern Michigan facing financial hardship due to breast cancer. Another northern Michigan event is the 6th annual Colors by the Lake Art & Craft Show at Village Green in Walloon Lake along M-75. It is a free event on Saturday and Sunday from 10am till 5pm with plenty of items to choose from. Perhaps you’ll find a nice gift for that someone special in your life. Accompanying this event is at Chili Cook Off that will benefit the local food pantry. Just $8 for the chili cook off. More details at PetoskeyChamber.com.

Finally, there will be plenty of spooky fun for the family at Fort Fright, Friday and Saturday from 6:30 till 9:30pm at Colonial Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City.
Lanterns light your way through an 18th-century fort and fur trading village overrun by werewolves, witches, goblins & ghouls. Storytellers weave spooky folktales near bonfires and treats. Last admission is at 8:30pm for both days, and it is only $10.20 – $15.31, with kids 4 and under, free. Complete details: MackinacParks.com/fort-fright.
