Pet of the Week 2025

If you are looking for a new furry family member for your home, please consider adopting from one of our area shelters. There are thousands of pets each year in Northern Michigan who lose their family for one reason or another. Rescue is love!

Cherryland Humane Society

Hi there, I’m Sovereign, a senior pup with a youthful sparkle and a heart full of love. I may have a royal name, but I’m as down-to-earth as they come. I adore cuddles, love learning new tricks (especially when treats are involved!), and can always make you laugh with my silly, playful side.

I’m curious, brave, and still have a lot of pep in my step, whether I’m exploring the yard or curling up for a cozy nap by your side. Independent yet affectionate, I know how to balance my queenly dignity with loyal companionship.

I could happily share my kingdom with respectful children and maybe even a calm dog friend, as long as we have a slow, proper introduction. However, I must decree: no kitty subjects, please!

If you’re looking for a sweet, spirited, and loyal best friend who will rule your heart with love and laughter, your search ends here!

Cherryland Humane Society is a private, no kill animal shelter servicing Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties. We are an independent, 501-C, non profit organization. CHS is dependent on donations, fundraising activities, estates, planned giving, memorials and occasional grants for operation. Visit our available pets online at cherrylandhumane.org

TC PAWS

Remy is one of several cats abandoned by an evicted owner who left a note saying he was leaving them to get back at his landlord. The cats were all in terrible condition, severely infested with fleas and suffering from flea dermatitis.

Initially, Remy was traumatized and very upset, but now he is increasingly friendly, interactive, and attention-seeking. He looks like a beautiful majestic lion. He loves food.

Remy did need medical intervention, which he does not like at all, nor does he like car rides. He doesn’t seem to mind other cats, but we think he may not be good for little kids. With an experienced cat owner, Remy will be a purr-fact feline companion!

If you are interested in adopting these or other TC Paw cats or would like to set up a meet-and-greet, please complete the  Pre-adoption Application .

TC Paw Cat Rescue was formed in the Spring of 2023 after the well-known northern Michigan rescue group AC PAW retired their rescue program for cats and dogs. Their mission is helping cats and kittens in the greater Traverse City region through rescue, spay/neuter, fostering, adoption, education and community collaboration.

Northern Purr Cat Rescue in St. Helen (Roscommon County)

Meet, Willow (gray) and her bonded fabulous feline friend, Lilith (brown tabby) ❤️ These two long fur ladies are bonded. Both kitties need a new home OR foster together, since their current human was facing a new housing situation and could not keep them. Willow is 3 years old and Lilith is 4 years old. Both kitties are spayed, up to date on vaccines and indoor. They’re affectionate, playful and love to be together bird watching or lounging in the sunshine. They would do well in a quiet home or someone experienced with indoor kitties.

Also…

Shayne is a grey tabby, spayed, rabies vaccinated, and combo tested negative. She has a head tilt that doesn’t seem to bother her or cause her pain and the vet did nit find anything wrong. She is friendly, rubs against your leg and wants pets! Shayne talks a little but haven’t seen her play with any toys. She was a good mom and raised her kittens. Now it is time she gets to be someone’s indoor kitty.

Charlevoix Humane Society

Well hello there!
The name’s Gypsy and it’s just so great to meet you! I’m a 3 year old Shepherd mix who found my way here after being in a giant facility downstate where there were way too many dogs. The nice staff here at at the shelter opened their doors to me and gave me a nice place to stay, and I have to say, I like it much better here. The staff here tells me I’m “quite the character” whatever that means.

I’m the fastest girl around and love speeding through the backyard, sometimes I even go so fast I forget where I’m going and have found myself crashing into something or other. That’s okay though, I get right back up and I’m ready to run again!

My dream human would be someone who is very active, like me. I’d love to go for walks and hikes and I’d even give swimming in the lake a shot if they let me. My past is a bit of a mystery, but what I do know is that I do not like other dogs, so a home where I can be the only pet would probably be best. I am mostly housebroken and they tell me I do a great job of keeping my kennel clean. Stop by and say hello to me, and maybe we can start our very own adventure together!

If you’d like to meet her or fill out an adoption application please reach out to the Charlevoix Area Humane Society. We’re open Monday-Saturday from 12-5.

Adopting a pet from the Charlevoix Area Humane Society not only changes the life of an animal but also enriches your own life in countless ways. If you would like to adopt one of our dogs or cats, you will need to fill out an application and once it is approved, we can then set up an appointment for a visit. Please call 231-582-6774 with any questions.

AuSable Valley Animal Shelter

Hi Friends! My name is Rocket! I’ll get straight to the point – I’m handsome, smart, and I’m here sending out a signal that I’m ready to find my furever home!

I am an almost 6.5-year-old, male, Alaskan Malamute, please don’t confuse me for a husky – while we have a lot of similar qualities – I’m convinced that being a Malamute is where it’s at! I weigh in right at about 90lbs, and I’ve been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and I’m up to date on my heartworm testing.

I am looking for a furever home that understands large breeds like me, and is aware of my grooming needs – I’m a high maintenance dude and I’ll need lots of spa days every year! I should also mention that kids, cats, and other dogs aren’t really my style. I’m an independent man that’s looking for humans to call my own, and hoping there is a home out there that will let me embrace my independence and share a life with you.

I’m not the type of dog that’s constantly seeking out your affection. While I enjoy long walks, lounging in the backyard, and treats, I just want to be a companion. I’m a strong & silent type of guy. I’m very smart, and I will work for food. I’m potty trained! A low activity household where I can lounge around and prepare to enjoy my golden years would be a dream come true for me. Like my name suggests, I’m a rocket shooting for the moon, but willing to land amongst the stars.

I am available to meet Tuesday – Saturday from 10am-6pm. If you have questions about how much I shed, or what my boundaries are – please reach out to my friends at AVAS. Email them at AVASCares2@gmail.com or by phone at 989-348-4117. I hope I get to meet you soon!

Breed: German Shepard Mix

Color: Black
Spayed/Neutered: Yes

Kelly, or Mama Kelly as some people knew her as is ready for her forever. Kelly was brought to Michigan from Oklahoma! At the time she was surrendered to the shelter in Oklahoma, she was with puppies, thin, un-trusting of people and scared. After coming to Michigan and finding a foster home, she learned not just trust but how to be a mom, a dog and a companion.

It is estimated that Kelly is around 3 years old and is just the sweetest girl. The look in her face when you approach her, she is excited to see everyone and if you are holding the leash and ready to take her on a walk she is just that much more excited. Kelly has had the roughest of times in the 3 short years of her life. From being surrendered, transferred, weaning puppies, adopted and the unfortunate unexpected passing of her owner, Kelly needs a forever.

It seems as though she is a little nervous around other dogs to start but does well after a proper introduction, and adjustment period. Kelly is cat specific here at the shelter, she does not appreciate our black office cat JoJo but is very interested in one of our outside cats. With a proper adjustment to an understanding home and cat, she may adjust well.

Kelly is unbelievably loving, trusting, hard not to fall in love with and sweet. We would love for Kelly to find her forever family, have the ending that we hope that all our animals find, the happiest life possible. We were told that Kelly is house trained (which we don’t guarantee but we’re certain that is accurate) as well as crate trained.

cheboyganhumanesociety.org. Or stop by the shelter at 1535 Hackleburg Road, Cheboygan. Call 231-238-8221 for more information. Shelter hours are Mon-Fri 9-4pm and Saturday noon-4pm.
