A Quiet January Weekend

weekend-fun-five-jan-9-2026-2

We are into our second weekend in January, and it is quiet after the hustle and bustle of Chirstmas and New Years. This weekend may be a good weekend to just do something fun and quiet… perhaps get outdoors and enjoy the winter spendor.

And you can enjoy and evening outdoors with a Lantern-lit Evening, on Friday at 6:30PM at the Grass River Natural Area in Bellaire. Enjoy a self-guided lantern-lit hike, or an evening ski or snowshoe on GRNA’s trails & boardwalks if there is snow. There will be a campfire at the Center pavilion & the heated building will be open & staffed. The cost is $5 person. More details are at GrassRiver.org.

Have you had a chance to restock after Christmas and New Year’s festivities? If not, perhaps head over to the Farmers Market at the Village at Grand Traverse Commons
on Satruday morning at the Mercado. You can stay warm and shop the Indoor Farmers Market from 10am-2pm. There will be over 30 vendors offering a variety of delicious items from farm fresh eggs, meats and cheeses, to fruits, veggies, homemade breads and more! The market offers easy access and ample parking. Enjoy the ambiance of the retail marketplace. More details can be found at TheVillageTC.com on their events page.

Do you enjoy cross-country skiing? If you do, and you’d like to have a family day out, Saturday will be Winter Trails Day at the Crystal Mountain Cross-Country Center in  Thompsonville. There will be free cross-country skiing for both children & adults new to snow sports. This free clinic includes a lesson, day pass , and rental equipment. Demonstrations will be held at the top of each hour and will be about 15 minutes long. Offered at 1pm, 2pm & 3pm. Registration is required, as space is limited. Please call the Cross-Country Center at 231-378-3110.

Saturday nights are always good for a date night. So, why not go out and have fun seeing The Magic of Motown? It will be at the City Opera House in Traverse City at 7:30. It will be a Journey Through Motown’s Best Including: The Temptations, The Jackson Five, Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Four Tops, Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson and more. You can still get tickets. They are available at cityoperahouse.org.

It is always nice to get out and see a live performace in a cozy environment. If that is something that would interested you, see the Brass Quintet from the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra. On Sunday, at 4 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Petoskey, they will perform a free concert. This will be a varied program, with music ranging from classical repertoire to Ain’t Misbehaving by legendary jazz great Fats Waller. The concert will begin promptly at 4 p.m. No tickets or registration are needed for this free, public concert. For more information, visit glcorchestra.org.

That is my Weekend Fun Five for this weekend. Have fun this weekend,
John Kelly
