PET INFORMATION:
Name: Makwa
Info: Female, 1 years
Days At the Shelter: 35 days
Makwa is a silly, goofy girl with a heart full of joy and legs fast as a racecar. She lives for playtime whether it’s chasing toys, playing fetch, or tearing around the yard in full-on zoomie mode. Rolling around in the snow or grass is one of her favorite pastimes, especially when she can show off that big, beautiful smile and her long floppy tongue.
Makwa adores people and loves to be involved in whatever you’re doing. She has a funny little habit of standing on you before settling in for cuddles, and she’s more than happy to share her toys with her favorite humans. With her excellent nose, she’s a great sniffer and enjoys exploring the world one scent at a time. She already knows how to sit and is eager to keep learning.
She can be a bit hesitant when meeting new faces at first, and things like over-the-head leashing or pets can make her a little nervous but she recovers quickly and blossoms into an outgoing, playful goofball once she feels comfortable.
Makwa would do best in a home with no cats. She has potential with other dogs, especially those who enjoy her very puppy-like energy and playful nature. Makwa would do best with respectful kiddos as new faces, quick movements at first can be scary, give her some time and she’ll be a friend for life.
If you’re looking for a fun-loving, affectionate, and endlessly entertaining companion, Makwa might just be your perfect match.
FYI, I’m sending this email a little early because I will be out of town until Tuesday. If Makwa ends up on a pending adoption or gets adopted before Wednesday, we will send a new pet to feature.

MAUREEN & IZZY
Were two very skinny strays living under a deck. The owner of the home felt they had been dumped as they had never seen them before.
Maureen is a friendly, confident cat. She loves attention and loves to be picked up and held to your chest while you talk to her. She loves to curl up on your lap. She is a beautiful girl with the most beautiful eyes. She is 1 1/2 years old.
Izzy made herself right at home with her foster family. She likes to be picked up and held. She’s quick on her feet and enjoys exploring high, low and small spaces. When she’s tired, she look for a quiet spot to nap. Izzy has beautiful green eyes and a shiny tortoiseshell coat. She is 1 1/2 years old.
Maureen and Izzy are very bonded and we would like to have them adopted together. We are hoping someone has room in their home and heart for this pretty pair.
If you would like to meet to adopt Maureen and Izzy, go to our website at www.tcpaw.org and fill out a pre-adoption questionnaire. A TC Paw volunteer will contact you.

Meet Mack, a two year old Lab mix who recently found his way to the shelter due to unfortunate circumstances. Mack is a very sweet boy who is always ready for some play time and love! We are still learning about Mack, but his previous owner was kind enough to write up some information on him for us to share. From Mack’s previous owner:
Birthday May 28th, 2023 Mack’s first person, my brother in law, passed away unexpectedly and that is how Mack and his sister, Roxy came to live with us from Arizona to Michigan in July 2025. Mack was crate trained as a puppy, so that was helpful with turning him into a Michigan house dog. We have not used a crate with Mack since early September. He only marked inside the house once before he was neutered in August. Since then, he has had zero accidents in the home. He also appears to know the command “sit”. Mack is very polite and does not beg for food or steal it off the counter or table. We were feeding him two cups of dry dog food twice a day, at 8am and 4pm. Some days he would start to whine for his dinner at 3:30pm. He likes many types of vegetables and fruit. He loves to play an enrichment game called “find it”. We have him sit and stay, and then hide food around the house. We come back and give him the command “find it” and off he goes. Then we do it again. Words that we use a lot are stay, wait, alright, this way, come here, and okay.
We are older and retired so we could give Mack lots of attention and take him on many walks. It took both of us to deal with his 2 year old activity level. While at the beach (he likes pulling rocks out of the lake) or on walks down our rural road, we have seen Mack be the good dog, every time, even when dealing with an aggressive off leash dog. Six times other dogs have charged him and he just quietly stood his ground, with confidence, the other dogs eventually backed off. Mack loves running after Chuck-It balls and isn’t always good at giving it up once he brings it to you. If you wanted him to get a good run in, I would have another ball and show it to him when he came back. Then I would tell him to “drop it” (the one in his mouth) before I would toss the second ball. He is very playful and would often try to entice his older sister to play. Mack’s only bad habit is wanting to hunt. He will go after squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, raccoons, skunks and porcupines. You will notice that he spends a lot of time sniffing the air. Because of his desire to hunt and chase, is it best to use a front clip harness.
Mack is a very good boy and the only reason we have to put him up for adoption is because, just once, he and I weren’t paying attention and he accidently ran in to me and broke my knee, requiring surgery. We were already old, but now I am in the frail category. It is heartbreaking to give Mack up for adoption. He deserves a new family that can meet his exercise needs. He is a loving, joyful, good dog.
If you’re interested in meeting Mac, you can set up an appointment by calling the Charlevoix Area Humane Society at 231-582-6774. She can’t wait to meet you!

Hi, I’m Star! I’m a 10-year-old white German Shepherd lady looking for my forever home. Even though I’m a senior, I still have lots of energy for walks, playtime, and adventures with my people! I love being active, exploring, and spending quality time with those I trust. I’d love a home where I can be loved, kept engaged, and treated like the loyal companion I am. In return, I’ll give you devotion, fun, and plenty of heart. If you’re looking for a spirited, loving friend, I’m your girl!

Hi, I’m Princess Cocoa Bean — my friends here at the shelter call me by my full name, or call me beans, beanie, or Princess Bean. It doesn’t matter what you call me really, just don’t call me late for treats, snuggles, or dinner.
A little about me, I’m around 5-year-olds, I’m a large mixed-breed lady weighing in at about 60lbs. I have been spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and I’m up to date on my heartworm testing.
I came to AVAS after my dad tragically passed away. It was a big, scary change for me, and I was very shy at first. But once I realized I was safe, my confidence has been getting better every day! I am still a little shy making new friends, but if you’re patient with me, I’ll show you just how sweet I am.
My perfect kingdom, oops, I mean home, would be one where I’m the only furry friend. I would do best in an adult-only home, or one with older children who can handle my wiggly butt that is always going once I’m comfortable and happy around my people. I’m not a fan of cats – because I’ve been told they don’t like to be chased.
My manners could use a bit of fine-tuning, but good news – I’m highly food-motivated, which makes training much easier and honestly pretty fun. I’ve been working on all the things at the shelter, leash walking, meeting new people, and basic commands.
I would love to meet you, if you want to meet me, stop by the shelter Tuesday-Saturday 10am-6pm and we can have some snacks at my temporary castle. If you have questions reach out to my friends at AVASCares2@gmail.com or by phone at 989-348-4117. See you soon!

Y’all meet Bonnie! Bonnie is a 2 year old mix girl with the biggest smile. Bonnie loves adventures, going out, being around people and when it is all said and done, enjoys her bed time too.
Bonnie does not seem to mind other dogs, she had been around them previously. Bonnie unfortunately lost her owner not too long ago and the house that tried to take her in, just wasn’t working out.
Bonnie has been thrown through some real trials in the year 2025 and we’re hopeful that maybe 2026 has some amazing things in store for this amazing girl. Bonnie still needs some work on her leash manners but everyday with our amazing volunteer dog walkers, she is getting better and better. Due to her circumstances, we’re not sure how Bonnie does with kids but she is so social and fun to be around, as long as they can respect her and giving her time and space, we’re sure she’ll do great!
Any home that Bonnie is in, cats are a no go, she does not do well with them. If you’re interested in Bonnie, feel free to fill out an adoption application either online or in person.
