Pet of the Week 2026

If you are looking for a new furry family member for your home, please consider adopting from one of our area shelters. There are thousands of pets each year in Northern Michigan who lose their family for one reason or another. Rescue is love!

Cherryland Humane Society

PET INFORMATION:
Name: Burton
Info: Male, 1 year
Days At the Shelter: 84 days

Burton is an outgoing, confident, and delightfully goofy boy with a big personality to match his big heart. This strong, playful kid loves to stay busy and isn’t shy about asking for attention. He’ll happily move from person to person leaning in for pets, love, and affection. After a good play session (and yes, some drool), Burton is perfectly content sitting next to his favorite human on the couch.

He enjoys playtime and does especially well with durable rubber toys, balls, and tug toys. While he’ll play with soft toys, he prefers sturdier options and can also self-entertain when needed. Burton is playful, social, and enjoys sharing his toys with people.

Burton already knows sit and shake, and he’s continuing to learn polite manners, including being more gentle when taking treats and toys. He is very playful with other dogs and may do well with the right dog friend following proper introductions. With continued training, Burton may also have potential to live with confident cats.

Due to his enthusiastic and mouthy play style, Burton would do best in a home with children ages 12 and up. He’s an overall silly, fun-loving boy who will thrive in a home ready to keep him engaged, continue his training, and enjoy his affectionate, playful nature.

Burton is ready to bring joy, laughs, and lots of love to his future family!

Cherryland Humane Society is a private, no kill animal shelter servicing Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties. We are an independent, 501-C, non profit organization. CHS is dependent on donations, fundraising activities, estates, planned giving, memorials and occasional grants for operation. Visit our available pets online at cherrylandhumane.org

TC PAWS

Meet Lexi!

While Lexi gets along with other cats with a gentle introduction, she would thrive best in a peaceful, adult-only home. Experienced cat owners will appreciate her unique personality and needs. Although she tolerates dogs, her ideal environment is one where she can reign as the sole pet.

Lexi is a beautiful 5.8-year-old calico. If you’re ready to provide a loving home for this sweet talker, visit www.tcpaw.org to fill out a pre-adoption questionnaire. A TC Paw volunteer will contact you. Take the first step toward welcoming Lexi into your heart.

If you would like to meet to adopt Lexi, go to our website at www.tcpaw.org and fill out a pre-adoption questionnaire. A TC Paw volunteer will contact you.

Meet this week’s Pet of the Week, Porkchop!

If those big brown eyes don’t immediately draw you in, Porkchop’s loving demeanor surely will! Porkchop is a younger mixed breed dog that found his way to us after spending some time on his own. Porkchop’s finders spent many days trying to catch him and after some time they finally earned his trust.

He was very skinny and had a face full of quills, but was so happy to finally be rescued. Going by Porkchop’s outgoing and happy personality, you would never guess he had spent nights alone. He quickly warms up to everyone he meets and even seems to know how to sit!

We are all quickly falling in love with Porkchop, but this special boy deserves his very own family and home to call his own. We just know that once given a chance, this guy will be the best friend you could ever have. Porkchop seems to do well with other dogs and we think he would likely do well with cats. He does seem to be house trained as well.

If you’re interested in meeting Mac, you can set up an appointment by calling the Charlevoix Area Humane Society at 231-582-6774. She can’t wait to meet you!

AuSable Valley Animal Shelter

Hi Friends – My name is Raffie, pronounced like “ra-fee”. I am a roughly 1 year old, neutered male, medium/large mixed breed dude, weighing in at a solid 50ish lbs! I am a total bowling ball – I am a rough and tumble kind of player that has lots of energy to burn off.

My name means “one that will prosper” and that couldn’t be more true – as since I’ve been at the shelter – the team has identified some opportunities that I have for further training. With the training I’ve had already, I have done exactly as my name suggests – I have prospered. I pick up on training so quickly – I am a very smart bowling ball! I still have some room for improvement, and I’m hoping you can help make me the goodest boy out there.

In working with the trainer, I’ve learned and mastered the “leave it” and “take it” skills, and how to redirect my attention back to the human in charge. I’m working on learning to let humans take me for a walk, instead of the opposite.

My ideal home will have someone strong, confident, patient, and willing to uphold firm boundaries with me. I would do best in a home without children or cats. Like I said before – I’m a rough and tumble player – so I would hate to knock anyone over. I might do well living with another dog if we mesh well together – just make sure if you come to meet me, you bring any potential friends with you! If you can give me this type of home, you really will have a smart, loyal, and affectionate companion.

The shelter is open Tuesday-Saturday 10am-6pm and I would love it if you stopped by to meet me! If you have any questions, please reach out to my friends at AVASCares2@gmail.com or by phone at 989-348-4117. Looking forward to meeting you soon!

Cheboygan County Humane Society

Bonnie is a 2-year-old mixed-breed sweetheart with a heart as big as her smile. She loves fresh air, little adventures, and being around people who make her feel safe and loved. At the end of the day, she’s happiest curled up and cozy, just enjoying the comfort of companionship.

After losing her owner, Bonnie’s world was turned upside down, and a new home wasn’t the right fit. Through it all, she has remained loving, social, and eager to connect—a true testament to her gentle, resilient spirit.

Bonnie enjoys other dogs and is making great progress on her leash skills with help from our wonderful volunteers. While we’re unsure how she does with children, her friendly nature shines, and with patient, respectful kids, she could truly thrive. A cat-free home is a must.

Bonnie has known enough loss—now she’s ready for stability, love, and a forever family. We’re hoping 2026 is her year.

If you are interested in Bonnie or any of our other furry friends please fill out an application which can be found on our website.
