Heather's Health Connection

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and so here is your first reminder to do your October self check.  I know I have a hard time remembering myself... so when I saw this, I downloaded it right away!

The non-profit Keep A Breast teamed up with verynice studio and The Rare Studios  to re-think the role of smart phones in breast cancer awareness and prevention. The FREE app provides a visual step-by-step overview of the breast self-exam and allows you to easily schedule an automatic monthly reminder with a pop-up text reminder.

With 40% of diagnosed breast cancers being self-detected, the iPhone and Android compatible app aims to educate young people about the importance of breast self-examination and its timing. The monthly reminder helps the user perform their breast self-exam at the same time every month, at the recommended time, right after your monthly cycle. Because of the normal hormonal fluctuations in a woman’s body that affect breast tissue, it is important to select the same time every month so you will be able to distinguish between normal change and something that feels different.

This app can be downloaded from the iTunes and Google Play stores. Both verynice and The Rare Studio helped make the app possible by graciously contributing over 150 hours of pro-bono service to the organization, allowing us to offer this life-changing – and perhaps life-saving app- free to the public.

Starting Conversation over the Holidays

by Heather Leigh posted Dec 19 2017 10:05AM
Well the holidays are here and that means time with family. Sometimes it's extended family you don't see very often. If you have a large family that gets together every Christmas.....cherish it. My husband's family does a fun New Year's Eve celebration but on my side of the family my sister lives in Minnesota, my mom's side of the family are gone, and my dad's side....well let's just say it would be too much drama!  I guess looking on the bright side- I don't have to worry about awkward conversations with family I don't know well or see very often but a lot of people are put in that exact position once a year.  So what is the key to a good conversation starter? The trick is to ask about something interesting without going too shallow or too deep, and avoiding topics that could be dicey. If you think about topics you're interested in ahead of time you can prepare for interesting conversation.
Need more help with this? Check out a great article all about conversation starters and enjoy that family get together- not everyone has that gift!

Pet of the Week

Hey folks, my name is Dexter and I'm a two year old long hair cat with fur coloration they call tick. I guess it has speckles of white, black and brown that gives me a cool look. I also have these long white whiskers that mean I have smarts, of course that could be an old wive's tale, but it sure sounds good to me. Some say I may even have Maine Coon in my bloodlines, but nothing has been proven. No matter; because to me the most important thing is that I'm a nice guy, and I sure hope you'll think so too once you meet me. Read more about him here.
