Pet of the Week 2025

If you are looking for a new furry family member for your home, please consider adopting from one of our area shelters. There are thousands of pets each year in Northern Michigan who lose their family for one reason or another. Rescue is love!

Cherryland Humane Society

Hello, I’m Miss Stevie-ous! I’m a fun-loving, two year old, energetic cat who loves to play and explore. My curiosity knows no bounds, and I’m always up for a good laugh. I’m smart, too, figuring out puzzles and games with ease. I’m also a big fan of TV, especially nature shows – they’re my favorite! I’m not much for being picked up, but I’m a loyal companion who loves to cuddle and keep you company. I’m a little goofy at times, but that’s part of my charm. Adopt me, and I promise to bring lots of laughter and love to your life! I have potential to live with dogs with slow proper introductions.

Cherryland Humane Society is a private, no kill animal shelter servicing Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties. We are an independent, 501-C, non profit organization. CHS is dependent on donations, fundraising activities, estates, planned giving, memorials and occasional grants for operation. Visit our available pets online at cherrylandhumane.org

TC PAWS

This week, we have a bonded pair of kittens, Reggie and Shila.

Reggie came to TC Paw from a TNR situation. A feral mother cat and her four-week-old kittens were living in a crawlspace. The mother was released, and the kittens were placed in a TC Paw foster home. Reggie was friendly from the start. He’s a mellow cat who purrs readily and plays with his littermates and the toddler and teens in his foster home. He doesn’t hide from people or activity, and he likes to be around the other cats. Small cat toys and long hair are his favorite playthings. Reggie’s only dislikes are the family’s two small dogs. Reggie hisses at them when they came near. Otherwise, he’s an easy-going guy who will be a great pet. Reggie’s foster family welcomes home visits from applicants who want to meet him in his home setting.

Shila also came to TC Paw from a TNR situation and is bonded with Reggie. Shila arrived at her foster home hissing and hiding, but it took only a day for her to warm up to the toddler and teens in her foster home. She likes being held and petted and being with other kittens, but she’s content on her own too. Her foster home has two small dogs that Shila prefers to avoid. The foster family welcomes home visits from applicants who want to meet Shila in her home setting.

If you are interested in adopting these or other TC Paw cats or would like to set up a meet-and-greet, please complete the  Pre-adoption Application .

TC Paw Cat Rescue was formed in the Spring of 2023 after the well-known northern Michigan rescue group AC PAW retired their rescue program for cats and dogs. Their mission is helping cats and kittens in the greater Traverse City region through rescue, spay/neuter, fostering, adoption, education and community collaboration.

Northern Purr Cat Rescue in St. Helen (Roscommon County)

Meet Maureen (left) and Izzy (right). These girls are bonded and need to stay together.

Maureen was a skinny stray living around and under the deck of a Kewadin residence whose owners called TC Paw and said they thought she and the other cat with her had been dumped nearby since they hadn’t seen the cats before. Maureen is a friendly, confident cat who looks you right in the eye. She kind of flirts with you by rolling on her back when she wants something. Really cute. She’s a pretty cat with a mane around her face, a bushy tail, soft fur, and eyes that go from gold to green in different light. She’s quick on her feet and likes to stand on shoulders or chair backs to be close and observe. She uses her scratching post regularly. Maureen loves attention. Pick her up and hold her to your chest, talk to her, and let her curl up in your lap. She looks out the window and chatters at birds. When she’s hungry, Maureen will nibble and lick the ends of your fingers. Maybe it’s a behavior left over from being a hungry stray that will fade when she’s confident that there’s plenty of food.

Izzy made herself right at home with her foster family. She has a loud purr, and she likes to be picked up and held. She has beautiful green eyes, a shiny tortoiseshell coat, and an orange spot on her rear paws. She’s quick on her feet, uses her scratching post, likes to stretch out, and enjoys exploring high, low and small spaces. When it’s naptime, she finds a quiet spot. Possibly because she was so hungry as a stray, Izzy has a big appetite and will finish a slower cat’s food. Her foster intervenes, and we think this behavior will fade as Izzy gets more confident that there’s plenty of food.

Charlevoix Humane Society

Meet Wiggles! Wiggles is a 3 1/2 Year old Australian Shepherd who arrived at the Shelter on September 5th as a transfer from VanBuren county. Being an Australian Shepherd, he’s very high energy and needs someone who is willing to spend time working with him. Wiggles would do best in a home where he is the only dog, as he tends to be a bit unpredictable when meeting new dogs. Fill out an application today, and come meet Wiggles!

Adopting a pet from the Charlevoix Area Humane Society not only changes the life of an animal but also enriches your own life in countless ways. If you would like to adopt one of our dogs or cats, you will need to fill out an application and once it is approved, we can then set up an appointment for a visit. Please call 231-582-6774 with any questions.

Age: 1 year 7 months 1 day
Gender: Female
Size: Medium
Color: Brown/White

Hi, I’m Coconut! I’m a brown-eyed, wiggly-tailed, love-soaked pit bull just waiting to meet my forever person. People say I’ve got the goofiest smile and the softest ears-I’ll let you be the judge (but I think they’re right ??).

I’ve been through a lot in my life, but you’d never guess it. I wake up every day excited for belly rubs, sniffy walks, and snacks (I really love snacks). I’m a pro at lounging in the sun and giving the kind of cuddles that make all your worries melt away. Plus, I’m spayed and up to date on vaccines!

What I want most is a human (or a few!) who will love me as much as I’ll love them. I’m loyal, goofy, and full of joy. I’ll be your shadow, your sidekick, your therapist, your walking buddy, your everything.

If you’ve got a cozy spot on the couch and room in your heart, I’d love to meet you.

The Little Traverse Bay Humane Society is at 1300 West Conway Road or online at LTBHS.com. They are a private, no kill shelter serving Emmet County.

AuSable Valley Animal Shelter

Well, hello friend! My name is Pogo! Yep – you guessed it, just like Pogo Stick! You might wonder why my name is Pogo, and I’m sure happy to tell you. It’s because I’m the most fun senior dude you’ll ever meet, and I can’t wait to bounce my way into your heart!

I am a roughly 8-year-old, large mixed breed dude, I’ve been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and I’m up to date on my heartworm testing! I found myself running as a stray, and sadly my humans never came to claim me. I know right?! It has left everyone at the shelter equally confused – because they say I’m the sweetest soul there is – and I am always down for a car ride and a pup cup!

Because I was a stray, not much is known about my past life, but one thing is for sure, I’m hard of hearing – or rather I’m deaf. The staff seems to think I’d do amazing learning hand signals (even in my elder age) because the moment I see someone looking to pay attention to me, I am instantly engaged and eager to be right next to them. I’m working on making friends with other dogs here at the shelter, and I’m not sure how I’d do with those things that meow – their sneaky behavior might activate my prey drive – especially since I can’t hear them coming. I seem to have no issues with any human I meet, and for being an elderly guy – I still have a lot of spunk left in me!

When I’m not busy bathing in the sunshine, snoring, or getting snuggles from the staff – I’d love to meet you! I’m available at the shelter Tuesday-Saturday from 10am-6pm. If you have questions about me, you can reach out to our team at AVASCares2@gmail.com or by phone at 989-348-4117. I sure hope I get to meet you soon!

Cheboygan County Humane Society

Breed: Beagle/Terrier Mix
Age: 7 years
Sex: Male
Color: Tri Color
Spayed/Neutered: Yes

Due to no fault of his own, Buddy is back here at CCHS. When Buddy went out just a little while ago, we weren’t too sure how he would do with cats and unfortunately, he prefers to chase them rather than ignore them. Buddy does do great with other dogs though! Buddy has interacted with children and doesn’t seem to have any issues giving them some love too. He may be 7 years old but Buddy still has the energy and drive of a 2 year old. Buddy loves to walk off his energy and enjoy a good couch nap afterward. He is still active, fun-loving and belly rub obsessed. Buddy doesn’t understand all of his manners as he just wants you to give him loving so he does forget not to jump, but he is a smart boy and accepts correction very well. Buddy is all of a 35 pound car ride loving, belly scratch obsessed best friend wanna be looking for the best home he could imagine.
Just like any of our other animals here at CCHS, Buddy will require a meet and greet with any people or dogs in the home prior to him leaving us.

cheboyganhumanesociety.org. Or stop by the shelter at 1535 Hackleburg Road, Cheboygan. Call 231-238-8221 for more information. Shelter hours are Mon-Fri 9-4pm and Saturday noon-4pm.
