Our First Spring Weekend

This weekend will be the first weekend in spring, and with that the final weekend of skiing in northern Michigan. A last hurrah, as it were. Of course, the hills aren’t the only fun this weekend. With that, our Weekend Fun Five…

First, consider a Friday night out to see and hear some tributes to some of our favorite piano players at the Traverse City Opera House with, The Piano Men, at 7:30PM in Traverse City. This America’s Premier Billy Joel & Elton John Tribute Artist with over 3,000 appearances world wide. Experience all the hits, from “Piano Man,” “My Life,” “Benny & the Jets,” “Rocket Man” & more. The Slush Cup is this Saturday, from 2PM-4PM, at the The Highlands at Harbor Springs. You can have fun while skiing across the pond! Registration runs from 9am-1:30pm near the Brew Bar in the Day Lodge. Slush Cup starts at 2pm. This elimination-style event takes those who succeed in crossing the pond to a lower start for another attempt. This continues until the top three finishers are determined. If you enjoy good family fun, Nub’s Nob’s Mardi Gras Saturday may be a great time, starting at 11am. The scedule of events are as follows…
• 11:00 AM: Crazy Kids & Mogul Muncher’s Silly Slalom
– Ages 20 and under. Head to Big Time for a super fun silly slalom course! No registration required.
• Noon: The Dorie Sarns Challenge
– A modified dual GS race on Birch Run. Awards for the top three finishers in each age group to be distributed at the bottom of the racecourse. Age groups: 8 and under, 9 – 12, 13 – 17, 18 – 29, 30 – 39, 40 – 49 and 50 and over. Registration is open until 11:30 AM. Cost: $1.00.
• 1:00 PM: Silly Slalom
– Ages 21 and over. Registration is open until noon. Meet at the Purple lift area. Grand Prize is a $200 Cool Cash Card! All teams must consist of two people.
• 2:00 PM: Soaker Cup
– Open to all alpine skiers. Competitors ski across LAKE NUBS without falling in. The start moves closer to the pond as the contest proceeds and the winner is the last person dry. Registration is open until noon, limit first 100 participants. Winner receives a $200.00 Cool Cash Card and the undying respect of their peers! $1 entry fee.
• 3:15 PM: Costume Judging
– On the deck. $200 Cool Cash Card for first prize and $100 for second and third. Registration is open until 2:30 PM. No charge. Age groups: 12 and under, 13-17 and 18 and older.

On Sunday, Slush Cup fun continues during at Boyne Mountain’s Winter Carnvial from 11:30 till 3PM. Watch daredevils attempt to skim across icy waters (or face a frigid splash). Finally, you can have great time and support a local high school’s performing arts program as you head to TC West Senior High School to watch the Little Shop of Horrors. The show start at 2PM. This show is based on the 1960 film by Roger Corman & featuring a book by Howard Ashman, music by Alan Menken & lyrics by Ashman, Little Shop follows meek plant store attendant Seymour, his co-worker crush Audrey, her sadistic dentist of a boyfriend & the man-eating plant.
